Step by Step through the Old Testament

Carlton L. Arnold, Teacher

Week 1

8/11/02 : Introduction

Step by Step through the Old Testament is geared toward heavy Bible Study. The idea is that when you finish the Old Testament, you will have a sufficient knowledge to where if someone told you to turn to the book of Judges, you would know historically what Judges is all about. That is the intent. It is to go through each book in the Old Testament in such a way that you will know about it. Hopefully by the end of the Old Testament, all of you should be able to recite from memory the history of the Old Testament. I know that sounds strange, but you will be able to. Right? You will be able to. We'll go over it several times, but you'll be very comfortable with the Old Testament. Most people who approach the Old Testament find it "historical" or "boring." "It's for the Jews, not for us as Christians." "The New Testament is alive; it's real." And most people who go through the Old Testament, after about 4 or 5 months, want to stay in the Old Testament. It's very exciting. My objective is to show you what's in the Old Testament and to get you excited about what God had to say in the Old Testament.

One of the things that I try to stress is that there is a oneness to God's Word. We'll discover this. Throughout the whole Bible, God says, "I desire a relationship with you. I desire a relationship with you." That's the whole thing we read about. Over and over and over and over.

Prayer:

Father, God, we come to you this morning. We thank you for the excitement we have in opening anew, afresh the Old Testament. And Father, I'm standing here thinking of all the things that we're going to be talking about and discussing and already I'm in awe of your Word, of your plan, God, that starts in Genesis 1 and goes through Revelation. Father, I just ask you to prepare our hearts and minds to just stand back and see your salvation and your righteousness and your mercy and grace, God, as we work through the Old Testament. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
